Book Review : On Becoming Toke Makinwa

I remember seeing a countdown to becoming on Toke Makinwa's Instagram page at the end of October 2016, at that time I figured it was the usual photoshoot that celebrities splash out on social media aka Pre-birthday pictures, so I thought nothing of it, up on till she released a video on Youtube on her birthday Tagged "On becoming".
I watched that video twice and that was when I realised "On becoming" was way more than the pre-birthday shoot I had pressumed it to be, This was a new Toke Makinwa showing the world she heard us loud and clear on social media, how much we have judged her without being in her shoes or being her.

I ended up finding out on Instagram that "On Becoming" is actually a book by Toke Makinwa , and I wondered what the book was going to be about, At this point social media had taken over as the judge over Toke's life one more time, Gossip blogs giving us excerpts of different chapters of the book, either a marketing strategy or a way to dish out the amebo as many gbeboruns were waiting to know the real story behind her very terrible marriage break-up. So many commenters in my opinion were "hypocrites" because they claim they were not going to buy the book, but we now know who is having the last laugh and cashing in on the book, many thanks to Amazon for putting the book as a best seller in its category.

Now to the review of the book "On Becoming Toke Makinwa";

Apart from very minimal  typos and omissions  here and there, the book was properly written. No abuse or over use of big english words, its something everyone can read and understand without needing a dictionary. This might not be the literature book you need to improve on your vocabulary, it is just a true life story said in plain english!

  • If you love so hard and you become so obsessed, then this book is for you
  • If you love so hard and you don't know when to let go, then this book is for you
  • If you have been told by your family or friends that leave that spouse alone, you will find a better person, then this book is for you
  • If there is a strange woman in your relationship, oya go and read this book now
  • If your man shows you that he prefers the other woman to you in action, in words, and in truth, but you are still hanging on to God for a miracle, then this book is for you
  • If you are in a hopeless love triangle, and you are the only one still holding on to what doesn't exist, then grab your copy of this book fast
  • If you ever lost a loved one, and didnt know how to cope as a result of your loss, then this book is for you
  • If you are the one that apologises for every single misunderstanding in your relationship, my dear what have you been waiting for, order this book now
  • If everyone sees black and you are the only one seeing white in your love affair, my dear take a cue from this woman
  • If he always shows his romantic side, after going away for so long, my sister learn from all the signs the lady ignored
  • And finally, if all you do is pray and cry about one man to God all the time, irrespective of all the above, then you should seriously learn from a real life example by reading this book.
If you all thought I was going to let out stories from the book, then you all have jonzed, because that's the whole essence for you to go and buy, read and learn. I know some people will say God forbid, how can I go and buy the book when I have better things to do with money, Oya now continue deceiving yourself when you know you like aproko but you are just forming fake level, with genuine exception to a few people though!.
For those who have young teenage girls about to get into the University, please let your girls hear about Toke Makinwa's story, they can learn a thing or two on walking away from a bad relationship in its early days.
I believe a good percentage of females have had a little bit of Maje in their lifes at one point or the other, I could actually relate to some chapters of the book at one point or the other in my life.
We all preach about domestic violence, do you all know that emotional violence is worse? Oh lord! How do you explain your newly wedded husband not desiring you sexually and yet impregnating another? So why the hell did you agree to marry me? Yeah the answer is simple, family and societal pressure against the man's will is responsible for this.
Dear Female reader, please lets all say no to Emotional Abuse, its injustice to women, and a silent killer of women, especially those that have no one to tell what they are going through behind close doors.
Finally, as the lyrics in Justin Bieber's song goes "Please dont judge me, I wont judge you". I won't be judging Toke/Maje/Anita for their shortcomings and inadequacies.Lets just hope they all end up finding love and becoming better partners/people!
Meanwhile, something tells me that Nollywood is going to do an adaptation of this book....Oh la la!
